about

This album could have been called "The Endless Feeling Beyond the Void", "Drowned by the Silence" or "Toward the Infinite". In the end it was “The Beauty of Dying“ that stood out. Melancholic and powerful, the first album of the Neuchâtel-based electronic music producer AUST plunges us into introspection where music is transformed into images and sensations.

After several EPs with more than 7 million listens on streaming platforms, AUST has released a successful first opus. Not much influenced by passing trends, he places beauty in the centre of his artistic approach. His music is best appreciated when the listening is active and conscious. Like during a night drive on the highway or a stroll through the deserted streets of a sleeping city.

The opening track, "S.A.M", takes us straight into the almost spatial dimension of some of the tracks with their dizzyingly deep arrangements. By surrounding himself with tape recorders and analogic synthesizers, AUST renews his way of composing by focusing on organic textures as on "The Beauty Of Dying" or "Amor Fati". The contrasts regarding dynamics are pronounced, as shown by the softness of "Rival Tapco" and the strengh of "New Hope". The rhythm section of this one confirms the hybrid side of its music, whose originality even creeps into the lyrics (a unisson of pain is made of "Random"...). To gain in uniformity, the compositions were envisaged by voluntarily limiting the choice of sounds, as would a band do with only a few instruments at its disposal. The artist plays bass on almost the entire album and sings on all tracks featuring vocals.

This musical authenticity is the result of deep emotions experienced during simple moments of life. These moments when one has the impression of touching eternity, like an ephemeral breach into the routine. That's what the record is about; the story of an ordinary guy who lives in insignificance, but whose hypersensitivity regularly jumps out at him. The implicated listener will be able to share these emotions directly with the artist.

This record can make you very happy or sad, depending on the feeling that was a little there before. Its atmosphere is conducive to reflections on the passing of time, the perishable aspect and the fragility of life. There are electronic flights of fancy that end in a climax, as on "Retrospective" or "Amor Fati". This liberating effect carries the listener away in a slight sonic inebriation, like a take-off before throwing oneself into the void...to perhaps fly away?
